Adult Day Treatment For Eating Disorders

The Emily Program’s eating disorder day treatment for adults encompasses both a partial hospitalization program/intensive day program (PHP/IDP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP). Each program is designed to support individuals in their recovery from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosabinge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED)

Our treatment philosophy is centered on providing a healing environment that addresses the complexities of eating disorders with empathy, understanding, and proven therapeutic methods. Whether you are stepping down from residential eating disorder treatment or seeking structured support to begin your journey to recovery, The Emily Program’s eating disorder day treatment for adults provides the tools and compassionate support needed for recovery and relapse prevention.

By focusing on personalized care for each of our clients, the team of experts at The Emily Program works to make sure that each individual’s journey to recovery is met with care and professionalism, fostering a path to a healthier, more empowered life.

Partial Hospitalization Program/Intensive Day Program (PHP/IDP)

This intensive, all-day program is for those stepping out of residential care or those who need more support than the intensive outpatient program (IOP). Clients in our PHP/IDP eating disorder program typically spend 5 days/week, 6 hours/day in PHP/IDP, either in our treatment centers or in a virtual environment.

Programming includes structured therapeutic meals, behavior exposure groups, and experiential challenges. During your treatment, you’ll meet with your therapist, dietitian, and other medical professionals. Psychiatric assessment, medication management, and medical monitoring may also be part of your partial hospitalization/intensive day program.

We also offer lodging accommodations to make PHP/IDP possible for clients coming from a distance. The lodging option is available to adults 18+ in St. Paul, St. Louis Park, Seattle, and Cleveland.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) focuses on recovery and relapse prevention for those in need of more structure and support than non-intensive outpatient treatment. While in our IOP eating disorder program, clients will typically spend 4 days/week, 3 hours/day in programming either in our treatment centers or in a virtual environment. Group-based intervention and therapeutic meals provide enhanced therapeutic support and symptom interruption.

Day Eating Disorder Treatment Includes:

  • Group therapy sessions focusing on recovery skills foundational to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Nutrition support through dietitian-planned meals
  • Creative and movement therapies
  • Nutrition and food preparation skills
  • Personalized therapy and nutrition counseling
  • Medical and psychiatric care that addresses the complexities of eating disorders and co-occurring conditions
  • Case management and educational support that monitors progress

What can you expect a day in our eating disorder treatment to look like?

Each day in our eating disorder day treatment for adults is thoughtfully structured to foster recovery and personal growth. Our PHP/IDP and IOP programs are tailored to offer a blend of therapeutic activities and personal reflection time, incorporating a variety of therapeutic approaches suitable for different ages. Each of the carefully selected methods aims to equip clients with the skills needed for recovery, identify and deal with triggers, and gain a deeper insight into the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral aspects that contribute to eating disorders.

A typical day in our eating disorder day treatment program might begin with a group session focused on developing coping strategies, followed by a shared, therapeutic meal designed to practice mindful eating in a supportive setting. Afternoons could include individual therapy sessions, nutrition education, or expressive arts therapy.

Our approach at The Emily Program is designed to emphasize the importance of integrating treatment into daily life, allowing clients to apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations. This balance of structured care and practical application ensures that each person has the tools and support to successfully navigate the recovery journey.
