Eating Disorders Therapy in Durham

Eating disorders are serious mental health issues. However, recovery is possible at The Emily Program’s treatment center in Douglas, NC. We provide residential treatment for adults.

Understanding that other mental health disorders often accompany eating disorders, our approach is both comprehensive and personalized. No matter what type of eating disorder and co-occurring disorders you’re dealing with, we are here to support you.

We design our multidisciplinary programs to address every kind of eating disorder effectively.

  • Our anorexia treatment in Durham, NC, focuses on addressing the strong fear of gaining weight. This distorted view of the body leads to serious food restriction and very low body weight. Treatment typically involves a combination of nutritional rehabilitation, psychotherapy, and medical monitoring to help patients restore a healthy weight and develop a more positive body image.
  • Our bulimia treatments in Durham involve addressing the cycle of binge eating followed by purging. This can include interventions to manage vomiting or excessive exercise as methods to prevent weight gain. Therapies often focus on developing healthy coping mechanisms, improving self-esteem, and establishing regular eating patterns to break the binge-purge cycle.
  • Binge Eating Disorder Treatment in Durham targets the repeated binge eating episodes that often involve a sense of loss of control and feelings of guilt. Treatment approaches may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, and medication management to help patients develop healthier relationships with food and their bodies.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) treatment addresses the extremely limited food intake, which can be driven by anxiety, sensory issues, or a lack of interest in food. This can result in nutritional deficiencies and impact daily functioning. Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including nutritional counseling, exposure therapy, and addressing the underlying psychological factors.
  • Treatment for Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) encompasses a range of eating disorders that cause significant distress and problems, even though they may not meet the exact criteria for other specific diagnoses. The treatment approach is tailored to the individual’s unique symptoms and needs, often involving a combination of psychotherapy, nutritional guidance, and medical support.

No matter what challenges you face with food or body image, our team offers caring support. We help you work towards lasting recovery.

Experiential Activities:

These experiences help you apply coping skills to everyday situations, bolstering your confidence and supporting long-term recovery by preparing you for real-life challenges.

Additional Therapies:

Our program extends beyond traditional methods, incorporating diverse approaches to facilitate your recovery through self-expression and emotional processing. These therapies include:

  • Expressive Arts: Engaging in creative activities can lower anxiety, help develop a positive body image, and create healthier coping methods. Art provides a non-verbal avenue to explore, express, and reflect on your emotions and thoughts, playing a significant role in your healing journey.
  • Movement Therapy: Participating in yoga, stretching, and strength exercises via movement therapy can help you reconnect with your body, offering a constructive way to manage stress and develop grounding techniques for long-term recovery.
