Comprehensive School Support During Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders are serious, potentially deadly conditions that can affect children and adolescents of any age, gender, or race. Whether your child is struggling with anorexia nervosabulimia nervosa, or other eating disorders, recovery is possible with early intervention and the right specialized eating disorder care. At The Emily Program, we’re here for your child—and for you—every step of the eating disorder recovery process.

Supporting Students Through Eating Disorder Recovery

At The Emily Program, we believe healing from eating disorders doesn’t have to mean mean putting life on hold, but school and academics can often be a barrier to eating disorder treatment for families. That’s why many of our Child and Adolescent eating disorder programs offer integrated academic support at locations across multiple states, helping students keep up with school while focusing on their eating disorder recovery. We also work closely with families throughout the treatment process to ensure everyone has the support they need.

Individualized School Support in Every Level of Eating Disorder Care

Depending on whether your child or teen is in our inpatient eating disorder treatment or residential eating disorder program, they’ll have access to continue learning in a way that feels manageable and meaningful during their eating disorder recovery.

NOTE: Partial hospitalization program and outpatient eating disorder therapy do not have school support at this time.

What Our Academic Support Program May Offer

Academic offerings are individualized by location, working with local school districts and their unique requirements as much as possible. Depending on where your child is receiving care, education support may include:

  • Daily school time built into the eating disorder treatment schedule
  • Fully equipped, distraction-free onsite classrooms
  • School-year instruction as well as support during summer months with coursework and enrichment in arts and science activities in the classrooms
  • Collaboration with public, private, and charter, as well as homeschool programs
  • Regular communication between educators, clinicians, and your family
  • Academic and emotional support recommendations shared with their school
  • Transition plans and integrated academic support individualized to your child’s needs post eating disorder treatment

Expert Care May Make a Difference in Life at School

When your child or teen is struggling with an eating disorder, it can be extremely difficult to keep up with academic life. Without proper nourishment, a child’s brain development and cognitive function can be suppressed. The symptoms and malnourishment associated with an eating disorder may significantly impact someone’s ability to concentrate on school or homework, and also disrupt their ability to enjoy sports, extracurriculars and social activities at school.

Treating the eating disorder may help your teen get back to school with the skills they need to progress academically and return to activities they enjoy.
