Recovery Conversations: A Q&A with Alyssa

**Content warning: This is one person’s story; everyone will have unique experiences in recovery and beyond. Some stories may mention eating disorder thoughts, behaviors, and symptoms. Please use your discretion when reading and speak with your support system as needed.

Recovery Conversations is a question-and-answer series that features voices and stories of eating disorder recovery. In this edition, former Emily Program client Alyssa reflects on her recovery journey and what recovery has made possible for her.

Alyssa is a cat mom who loves singing, baking, and freelance design. She spends her free time watching her favorite TV show, Law & Order: SVU.

What, if anything, felt different about your most recent time in treatment compared to your previous experiences?

This time, I wanted to get better! I desired a body that would keep me alive. I was burnt out. I was motivated to change! I was able to sustain a good recovery for the longest I had been in a decade! My mindset has completely shifted for the better!! The Emily Program staff was also amazing!!!

What aspects of your treatment experience stood out to you?

I felt validated. I was brought up when I felt down. I was encouraged by the positive thinking I had already entered treatment with.

How has your sense of self shifted throughout your recovery journey?

I no longer have the same thoughts about myself. I listen to my body’s needs while being mindful of my actions.

What has recovery made possible for you?

I learned to see recovery as an opportunity of a lifetime! I have removed myself from social media, focused on outside goals (I bought my dream car!), and committed to lots of therapy. Most importantly, I have learned to accept my body for what it can do rather than what it looks like.

If you or a loved one is experiencing an eating disorder, help is available. Reach out to The Emily Program today by calling 1-888-364-5977 or completing our online form.
