Our Nutritional Services Support Real Recovery

At The Emily Program, registered dietitians are essential to our care teams. These experts tailor our nutritional evaluation, counseling, education, and meal-planning services to develop and promote your child’s mindful, nourishing eating patterns. You learn about healthy meals and snacks for your family, too. With nutritional awareness, food becomes just food again. To begin the journey to recovery, schedule an eating disorder assessment or call us at 1-888-EMILY-77 (1-888-364-5977) today.

Nutritional Services For Eating Disorder Recovery

Dietitians at The Emily Program co-facilitate each one of our intensive programs and work closely with therapists and medical staff. Your child’s care team includes a dietitian as well as other health professionals who specialize in eating disorders.

Nutritional evaluation

At your child’s first meeting, a dietitian completes a thorough assessment of his or her eating patterns and history, food and weight-related concerns, weight history, and particular dietary needs. You’ll work with your child and the dietitian to establish an approach to eating that fits your child’s recovery needs. And you’ll have a plan to make it happen.

Nutrition counseling

Ongoing counseling with a dietitian helps your child eat regular, nourishing meals and snacks as you progress on your recovery journey. Together with your dietitian, you and your child will develop strategies to overcome barriers along the way. You’ll help your child build coping skills and make peace with food.

Nutrition education

Our dietitians provide valuable nutrition education in one-on-one sessions, group sessions, intensive program meals and groups, and family education. We provide you with accurate nutrition information and help your child practice mindful eating skills.

  • Respect you and your child as individuals

  • Your child to actively participate in recovery from her/his eating disorder
  • You and your child to be honest and respectful with yourself and those around you
  • You and your child to make treatment and recovery a top priority

Our mission is transparent: To provide exceptional, individualized care leading to recovery from eating disorders. Ideally, we want a world of peaceful relationships with food, weight, and body image, where everyone with an eating disorder can experience recovery.

We’ll help your child and your family recognize and change destructive eating disorder behaviors and replace them with positive, lasting coping mechanisms that support a whole, joyful life.

We stay with you through recovery

When your child is ready to transition out of The Anna Westin House – Adolescent And Young Adult, we’re still here for your family every step of the way. The length of stay depends on your child’s needs and situation; most residents “step down” to our Adolescent Intensive Day Program when leaving Anna Westin House – Adolescent And Young Adult.

You’ll still have access to many of The Emily Program outpatient options for your child, such as Intensive Outpatient or Intensive Day Programs; individual, group, and family therapy; psychiatry and medical services; and nutritional counseling. We also work with community professionals, including your child’s physician, school staff, and your local therapists and dietitians, to ensure appropriate aftercare.

That’s why The Emily Program offers a variety of personalized programs, such as Adolescent Intensive Day and Partial Hospitalization programs to treat eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating, compulsive overeating, and other eating disorders. Let’s find the best option for your teen or young adult. Start by scheduling an eating disorder assessment or call us at 1-888-EMILY-77 (1-888-364-5977) today.

Real-Life Recovery Skills And Relapse Prevention Practice

Typically these programs meet Monday through Friday, seven hours each day. These intensive all-day sessions include therapeutic meals and snacks, multiple therapy modalities, and experiential challenges. Importantly, the schedule also allows time for studying and tutoring. AIDP is one of the best options for young clients needing the most symptom-reduction attention and staff support while still living at home.

One-on-one therapy, medical care, and family-based treatment

During the treatment process, your child will meet with a dedicated care team, including a therapist, dietitian, and other medical professionals. Our multidisciplinary approach includes psychiatric assessment, medication management, and medical monitoring. In addition to one-on-one therapy, many of our programs for adolescents are based on the Maudsley Approach, which recognizes the importance of family involvement in the treatment of eating disorders.

Outpatient And Intensive Outpatient Therapy Supports Your Child's Recovery

Children, teens, and young adults have different concerns than adults. Our providers here specialize in adolescents and will individually tailor a treatment plan to suit your child’s needs. Whether it’s individual, family, or group sessions (or all three), The Emily Program offers a continuum of developmentally appropriate treatment options for all young people. Scheduled around school hours, our weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly individual and group sessions build in times for family involvement—a crucial part of recovery.

Outpatient Care Strengthens Connections

With years of experience treating teens and young adults struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, compulsive eating, and related mental health issues, including substance use disorders, we know the value of family involvement in recovery. Outpatient therapy helps your child reconnect with family, friends, and community.

Our adolescent outpatient services team shapes its care programs on these core values:

  • Clients and families always first
  • Interdisciplinary, team-oriented care
  • Flexible, creative, and diverse treatment options
  • Tenacious empathy, respect, patience, and passion for all people in our community

We’ve designed our adolescent services so that parents, stepparents and/or loved ones will actively participate. The Emily Program offers support programs for siblings and counseling for co-parenting adults and couples, too.

Our team also reaches out to your community’s professionals who interact with your child, such as school staff and your physician, therapists, and dietitians, to ensure appropriate after-care. Recovery happens when we work together.

Personalized treatment plans

Our personalized treatment approach is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Family-Based Treatment may also be appropriate. We personalize each treatment plan, using best practices to provide:

  • Individual therapy for one-on-one sessions with a therapist who specializes in eating disorders and associated health complications
  • Group therapy with other adolescents and young adults experiencing similar issues, thoughts, and feelings
  • Family therapy, if appropriate, to involve parents, siblings, and other family members in the healing process
  • Nutritional rehabilitation, such as therapeutic meals and snacks, cooking classes, and recovery practice in real-world food situations
  • Medical and psychiatric services, with monitoring for vitals, medication, and other follow-up care
  • Chemical dependency and trauma programming
  • Integrative therapies such as art, yoga, movement, and recreational therapy to help adolescents and young adults connect with their bodies, feelings, and thoughts in new and creative ways

Intensive outpatient therapy

At The Emily Program, we provide intensive group-based intervention, support, and structure for children, teens, and young adults.

Our Adolescent-Family Intensive (AFI) program meets three or four days each week, with therapeutic meals and therapies for your child that emphasize recovery as well as practice for relapse prevention skills. Families are invited once a week to participate in groups and meals, too. Is AFI right for your child? Would something more structured and supervised, such as our Adolescent Intensive Day program or 24/7 residential care, provide a better recovery experience? When you complete the eating disorder assessment with your child, we’ll help you determine the level of care that will effectively promote your child’s recovery.

Our Young Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (YAIOP), which takes place at our Toogood location in St. Paul, MN, addresses the unique challenges that young adults face on the road to recovery, including starting college or full-time work, differentiating from parents, and living independently. This experiential, client-driven program is intended for young adults ages 17-22 with an active eating disorder diagnosis. Support nights are offered once a month for friends and family to help foster a strong external peer network.

Individual outpatient therapy

Every client at The Emily Program has an individual therapist and dietitian. In individual outpatient sessions, your child may meet one-on-one with care team members, including a therapist, dietitian, psychiatrist, and/or physician. You and your child will likely develop a personal connection with the care team over time. Our staff’s unwavering commitment to recovery strengthens this healing connection.

Group outpatient therapy

At The Emily Program, we believe that group therapy can be an incredibly important part of your child’s recovery from an eating disorder, because groups provide a safe, judgment-free environment to process thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with other teens and young adults in similar situations. We offer many age-appropriate therapeutic and skill-building groups, such as art therapy, yoga, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Training, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Eating Disorders And Chemical Dependency sessions. Group sessions vary by location. Your child’s individual therapist will recommend a group that might be the best fit.
