Program Description
The Intensive Day Program (IDP) provides comprehensive intensive day treatment for individuals struggling with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorder not otherwise specified. This program addresses psychological, nutritional and medical needs in a comfortable setting conducive to recovery. This program is designed to meet the needs of clients needing more intensive treatment, support, and structure. The Emily Program Intensive Day Treatment meets Monday through Saturday. Programming varies from three to seven hours per day. IDP combines group therapy, meals, experiential therapies, meal planning, psychoeducation, alternative therapies and family therapy.

Group therapy sessions are opportunities for individuals to discuss the varied emotions they are feeling and challenging experiences they are having. The experiential therapies include art therapy and relaxation techniques in addition to selected activities and discussion topics to help the individual focus on more positive alternatives to eating disordered thoughts and behaviors. Other modalities include spirituality group, yoga/movement groups, and other creative therapies.

The meals are to help people become more comfortable with eating "feared" foods and realize that all foods can fit into a healthy diet. The meals also provide the opportunity to work on fears of eating with others, food rituals, and food beliefs. The dietitian will assist the individuals with meal planning throughout the program to help alleviate anxiety, assure compliance, and encourage variety.

The Intensive Day Program emphasizes maximal involvement of the individual's family and/or significant other. The family is involved in the psychoeducation group which provides an understanding of the various components of the eating disorder. The family is also expected to attend the dinner and group therapy session one evening a week as well as lunch and group therapy on Saturdays.

The Intensive Day Program treatment planning incorporates transition into aftercare treatment. Individuals have access to the many outpatient options the Emily Program has to offer such as the Intensive Outpatient Programs, individual, group and family therapy, psychiatry services, and nutritional counseling. The Emily Program is also willing to work with other community professionals including physicians, therapists, and dietitians to ensure appropriate aftercare treatment is provided.

The level of support and therapeutic involvement within the Intensive Day Program is meant to help individuals overcome obstacles to recovery, gain new and healthier coping skills, and achieve their individual treatment goals. The longer length of treatment day allows for more successful symptom interruption, more adequate weight restoration, and more intensive and more frequent level of participation in group therapy. Participation in Intensive Day Treatment can help prevent the need for hospitalization, which can be costly and disrupting to everyday life.
